Cricket Namibia has announced professional contracts for ten women's
cricketers, making it the country's first sports governing body to have
contracts for both men's and women's national teams. The contract value and
other specifics have not been disclosed. The contracts were negotiated and
signed in February but only revealed on Tuesday.
"For the first time, we were able to professionalize the women's game.
This is a watershed moment in the country's sports history. "It's the
first time women have been signed on contracts where cricket is their
occupation," Cricket Namibia CEO Johan Muller said in an ICC statement.
"Ten women now have the option to support their families while following
their passion. We would like to thank Capricorn Group [the women's team's
sponsors] and everyone involved.
Contract values and other details have not been made public.
Kayleen Green, Sune Wittmann, Arrasta Diergaardt, Edelle van Zyl, Bianca
Manuel, Irene van Zyl, Wilka Mwatile, Mekelaye Mwatile, Naomi Benjamin, and
Saima Tuhadeleni are among the players signed on.
The Namibia women's squad, known as the "Capricorn
Eagles," is currently ranked 17th in the ICC Women's T20I team rankings,
their best finish to date. They most recently competed at the African Games,
when they won only one of their group-stage games and failed to advance to the
semi-finals.
Namibia has played 72 international matches since acquiring T20I status in
2018, winning 44 of them. They represented Africa in the 2019 ICC Women's T20
World Cup Qualifier but did not proceed to the 2020 main event.
