Washington Sundar was cut from the team to play for Tamil Nadu against
Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy semi-final.
Returning to the Indian team as vice-captain for the Dharamsala Test is Jasprit Bumrah. With the announcement of a 16-player team for the England series' final
Test, which gets underway on March 7, the BCCI reaffirmed as much on Thursday.
All-rounder Washington Sundar was not included in the 16 and was cut to join
his state team, Tamil Nadu, who will play Mumbai from March 2 to 6 for a chance
to participate in the Ranji Trophy final. KL Rahul was excluded from the team.
According to the BCCI release, Washington will "join the India squad after
the completion of the domestic fixture, for the fifth Test, if need be."
To give himself a chance to recover, Bumrah was left out of the team for the
fourth Test matchup with England in Ranchi. With one Test remaining, India's
victory in that match completed the series against England 3-1. Bumrah is
India's joint-highest wicket-taker in the series with 17 wickets at 13.64 from
the first three games, despite missing that match.
India and England still have World Test Championship points to gain in
Dharamsala, even if the series is already won. England is now ranked seventh on
the points table, while India is currently ranked second.
The BCCI further stated that Rahul is currently unable due
to his consultations with medical professionals in London on a quadricep tendon
injury that prevented him from playing in the series' second, third, and fourth
Tests. "The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring him and coordinating
with specialists in London for further management of his issue," added the
statement. Vice-captain Nicholas Pooran will command Rahul's team, the Lucknow
Super Giants, if he is forced to miss the first three IPL matches, which begin
on March 22.
The BCCI stated that Mohammed Shami, who underwent surgery earlier this week to
repair his right Achilles tendon, "is recovering well and will
soon head to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to commence his
rehabilitation process."
India's updated team for the Test in Dharamsala
Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel
(wk), KS Bharat (wk), Devdutt Padikkal, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel,
Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, and Akash Deep are the captain and
vice-captain of Rohit Sharma.
