In place of the suspended Wanindu Hasaranga is Asalanka.
For the first two of Sri Lanka's three Twenty20 internationals (T20Is) against Bangladesh, which begin in Sylhet on March 4, Charith Asalanka will captain the team instead of Wanindu Hasaranga, who is suspended. For the first time, Asalanka, the appointed vice-captain, will be leading Sri Lanka.
In place of Pathum Nissanka, who is recuperating from an injury he got during the last series against Afghanistan, Sri Lanka has brought in opening batsman Avishka Fernando. Additionally called up is legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay, who last participated in a Twenty20 match in February 2022.
For his run-in with umpire Lyndon Hannibal in the third
Twenty20 International against Afghanistan on February 21, Hasaranga was
suspended by the ICC for two Twenty20 Internationals. He will captain the last
Twenty20 on March 9.
Fernando's strong ODI performance was a major factor in his inclusion in the
team. He had made 91 off 66 balls and 88 runs-a-ball in two of the three games
in the series against Afghanistan. Due to a mix of form and fitness, he has
been an erratic member of Sri Lanka's squad since his last Twenty20
international match in January of last year. But it seems that Sri Lanka's new
selection committee wants to reinsert him into the first teams.
In contrast, Vandersay hasn't participated in a T20I in two
years. In the matches where Hasaranga is suspended, he essentially fills in for
Hasaranga. Mahesh Theekshana and Akila Dananjaya are the team's two front-line
spinners.
March 4 is the scheduled date of the first T20I. Sylhet will host the entire
series.
