Ricky Ponting confirms approach for India's head coach position

The former Australia captain is eager to be an international coach, but the moment is not yet perfect for him.
Ricky Ponting has stated that he was approached to be India's next head coach, but despite his strong interest in the position, he believes it is an "unlikely" option for him at this time due to the commitment required.
The deadline for applications is May 27, the day following the IPL final, and ESPNcricinfo has stated that Rahul Dravid will not be returning.
Ponting said he still wants to be a national coach, but the timing is not ideal given his other present jobs, including head coach at the Delhi Capitals and television work in Australia.

"I've seen a lot of reports about it," Ponting told the International Cricket Council Review. "Normally these things pop up on social media before you even know about them, but there were a few little one-on-one conversations during the IPL, just to get a level of interest from me as to whether I would do it."I aspire to be a senior coach for a national team, but a job with the Indian team would conflict with my desire to spend time at home. Additionally, working for the Indian squad would prevent me from participating in the IPL.

"Also, a national head coach is a 10 or 1111-month-of-the-yearob, and as much as I'd like to do it, it just doesn't fit into my lifestyle right now and the things that I really enjoy doing."
The BCCI has contacted Gautam Gambhir about the position, while Stephen Fleming and Justin Langer have also been linked to it.
Ponting did, however, attempt to keep the door slightly open by mentioning that his young son Fletcher had responded positively to the thought of him assuming the post.

"My family and my kids have spent the last five weeks over at IPL with me and they come over every year I had whispered to my son about it, and I said, 'Dad's been offered an Indian coaching job' and he said, 'Just take it dad, we would love to move over there for next couple of years'" he explained. "That's how much they love being over there and the culture of cricket in India, but right now it probably doesn't exactly fit into my lifestyle."
Ponting's other current positions are head of the strategy at the Hobart Hurricanes and head coach of the Washington Freedom in the MLC, where he signed a two-year contract for the competition, which follows the T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies. He formerly worked with the Australian T20I and ODI teams.
The BCCI has stated that the head coach post will span all three formats for three and a half years, from July 2024 to December 2027.
Dravid started his two-year term following the 2021 T20 World Cup. His contract was set to expire after the 2023 ODI World Cup in November last year, but he agreed to an extension till the end of the next T20 World Cup.
