Before the Gujarat Titans decided to bring in fast bowler Sandeep Warrier as a like-for-like replacement for the injured Mohammed Shami, the
India and TN fast bowler had participated in five IPL matches.
Warrier, an Indian international player of Kerala descent who currently plays
for Tamil Nadu, participated in five IPL matches, all with the Kolkata Knight
Riders from 2019 to 2021. The 32-year-old has also been without a game while
with the Mumbai Indians (2023) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2013–15).
Along with Mohit Sharma, Josh Little, Umesh Yadav, Spencer Johnson, Kartik
Tyagi, Darshan Nalkande, and Sushant Mishra, Warrier joins a fast-bowling
group.
Shami has also been ruled out of the forthcoming T20 World
Cup in June. Shami underwent ankle surgery in London after finishing as India's
top wicket-taker at the 2023 ODI World Cup. He is expected to return in late
2024.
Additionally, Matthew Wade will miss the Titans' opening two games as the
keeper-batter is scheduled to play for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield final.
Batsman Robin Minz of Jharkhand is also questionable. Following Hardik Pandya's
departure to the Mumbai Indians, Shubman Gill will lead the two-time finalists
and IPL 2022 champions this season. On Sunday night, the two teams will play
their first game of the season.
