England batter Harry Brook will play for Yorkshire during the County
Championship season after withdrawing from the IPL due to the death of his
grandmother. Root is also expected to participate early in the season.
Brook, 25, was set to play for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2024 after being
bought for INR 4 crore (£380,000) at a December auction in Dubai. But he
withdrew from the competition earlier this month following the loss of his
grandmother Pauline, with whom he had a close relationship.
He has yet to play competitive cricket in 2024 and has also
withdrawn from England's recent Test tour of India. However, he will now prepare
for the T20 World Cup in June by playing for Yorkshire in the County
Championship, with head coach Ottis Gibson indicating that he will be ready
from the start.
Yorkshire's first match of the season, against Leicestershire, is on April 5 at
Headingley. "Now that Brooky isn't going to the IPL, I suspect he's going
to be available for us for the first few games, including [against]
Leicestershire," Gibson told the Yorkshire Telegraph.
When Brook announced his withdrawal from the IPL, he stated
that "Nothing is more important to me than family". His choice to
withdraw will allow him to join them in Yorkshire while still competing.
Gibson also intimated that the ECB will make Joe Root available for some
early-season contests after he opted out of the IPL 2024. "He [Brook]
loves playing for us, and Rooty is also going to be available for some games in
that early period," Gibson told reporters. "Having those two playing
for us would be special."
