Carey calmly struck 111 from 135 balls to manage the hosts' innings and get
them home with 14 balls remaining in the innings as they chased the 249 set by
Queensland.
Queensland 248 for 7 (Knott 73, Graham 3-39) lost against Tasmania 249 for 4
(Carey 111*, Graham 63, Voll 3-56) by six wickets.
Nicola Carey helped Tasmania win the WNCL three-peat, as they defeated
Queensland by six wickets in the championship match thanks to her undefeated
century.
At Blundstone Arena, Carey calmly hit 111 from 135 balls to control the hosts'
innings and send them home with 14 balls remaining in the 249 chase.
Having been a regular opponent in the 50-over competition
for ten seasons following their entry in 2010–11, Tasmania only claimed their
maiden championship in 2022 and went on to win two more.
Carey is to be commended for the most recent one. Carey declined a national
contract in April of last year in an attempt to improve her game after spending
the entire winter at home after not being selected for Australia since December
2022. The choice has proven beneficial. The bowling all-rounder, who only
played in the WNCL once, finished first in the run-scoring standings this
summer. Her runs on Saturday brought her season total past 696. Carey's average
of 69.6 runs was only surpassed by Meg Lanning this year.
Carey scarcely gave spinner Charlie Knott a chance on
Saturday when he forcefully and twice reverse-swept him to the boundary. She
reached her century off 128 balls, having earlier had a 132-run partnership
that turned the match around with Heather Graham (63 off 75).
Graham was bowled while attempting a reverse sweep against Georgia Voll, giving
Queensland a brief sniff, but Naomi Stalenberg was caught for a duck three
balls later. With six wickets remaining, Tasmania required 67 runs from 68
balls at that point, but Carey and Emma Manix-Geeves made sure there would be
no last-minute nerves.
Carey remarked, "I'm relieved; that was
stressful." "EMG and Heather made my life so much simpler, even if I
felt itchy. Batting with Heather is so much fun; I adore it. I make it look
difficult, and she makes it look extremely easy."
Graham had already taken 3 for 39 with the ball to eliminate any possibility
that Queensland would set an impossible goal. In the 28th over, with Queensland
at 115 for 2, Graham skidded onto a ball to dismiss Lauren Winfield-Hill for 28
runs. After delivering a hard-hitting Knott for 73 late in the innings to
restrict Queensland to 248 for 7, she had Mikayla Hinkley leg before wicket at
33.
Tasmania's triumph places them as the second state after NSW
to win ten straight WNCL titles at one point between 2005–06 and 2014–15.
