When
Jasprit Bumrah took nine wickets in the Visakhapatnam Test against England, he
was named Player of the Match.
With
nine wickets at the end of the Visakhapatnam Test match against England (6 for
45 and 3 for 46), Jasprit Bumrah helped India tie the series at one. His yorker
that swung into Ollie Pope and uprooted his middle and leg stumps in the first
innings was the highlight of his performance.
"As
a youngster that [the yorker] is probably the first delivery I had learned
because I had come from tennis ball cricket and I had seen the legends of the
game, Waqar [Younis], Wasim [Akram] and even Zaheer Khan, I had seen them on
the television, how do they bowl yorkers," Bumrah told reporters following
India's 106-run "When I was younger, I thought that was the only strategy
for taking wickets. That's the first delivery I was taught, then. Yes, I
carried it with me and continued to use it to my advantage; in fact, it works
incredibly well to get wickets in Test cricket as well."
Despite
having 36 wickets at an incredible average of 13.06 and a strike rate of 29.5
in six Test matches in India, Bumrah stated he was no longer concerned with
statistics. "I don't look at numbers because I used to look at numbers
when I was younger. Yes, it excited me, but when you consider the numbers,
playing for India already carries a lot of pressure. And it doesn't really help
if you add that extra weight. I'm glad we prevailed, and it feels even better
when you helped make it happen."
Bumrah
responded, "Not the leader but I feel that I have played a little more
cricket," when asked if he felt like the head of India's attack, even though players like R Ashwin have far more experience than he does. We
are in the middle of a change. A lot of new bowlers are joining the league.
Therefore, I must assist and mentor them in any manner that I can.
Thus, it's always beneficial when we have specific conversations about what to
do in particular situations; it feels wonderful."
On
the last day of the Visakhapatnam Test, Bumrah gave India two crucial
breakthroughs. First, he trapped Jonny Bairstow's leg before wicket in the last
over before lunch, and then he broke an eighth wicket partnership by bowling a
catch to Ben Foakes. Is Bumrah a luxury to have in the team? was a question
posed to Rohit Sharma following the game.
Indeed, having Bumrah is a luxury. He's a champion player for us, you know," Rohit remarked. "You know, it's been a while since he's been working for the team. But, you know, you also have to consider the entire performance when you win a game like that. We batted well, and it goes without saying that we are aware of how difficult it will be to win a Test match in these kinds of circumstances. Our bowlers fulfilled our desire to step up by doing so."
