Following winter transfers, two new players will oversee the red- and
white-ball campaigns.
For the 2024 county season, Derbyshire's club captain will be David Lloyd,
while Samit Patel will captain the team in white-ball cricket.
At the end of the previous summer, Lloyd—who captained Glamorgan in 2022 and
2023—moved to Derby, where he will now captain Mickey Arthur's squad in the
County Championship.
Patel is also a new addition, having spent more than 20
years with Nottinghamshire, where he participated in the Trent Rockets' Men's
Hundred triumph in 2022 and won six trophies, four of which were in white-ball
cricket. In addition to having the second-highest number of wickets (208) and
the most runs (4,217) among the top ten in the competition, he holds the record
for the most Vitality Blast appearances (232).
"I'm delighted to be able to confirm David and Samit as our captains for
the 2024 season; both have great experience and have settled into the group
nicely," stated Arthur, Derbyshire's head of cricket.
"David will bring a real aggression to our red-ball game and I think our members and supporters are going to really enjoy our cricket in the County Championship this season."One of county cricket's most decorated players, Samit exudes a contagious winning mentality. The Vitality Blast this season will benefit greatly from his trophy-winning acumen and excellent cricket brains, especially in the white-ball game. "During the winter, our goal has been to recruit proven winners, to compliment the quality we already had within the squad to make us a competitive unit across all formats," the team stated. As we prepare for 2024, I'm excited to collaborate with our captains throughout the season."
On April 5, when they play Gloucestershire at Derby, Lloyd
will captain the team for the first time in the County Championship. On May 30,
when they play Northants in their Vitality Blast opener, Patel will make his
captaincy debut.
Lloyd stated: "It's a real honor for me to be named captain of our
red-ball side, we have a special group of players, coaching staff, and people
around the club, this is an exciting opportunity I couldn't turn down."We
have a ton of plans, and I believe that our members and supporters will have a
great season."
"I'm very honored and proud to lead the white-ball side," Patel continued. I am excited to collaborate with the fantastic team that we have put together."We hope that the style of cricket we want to play will draw in the supporters, who are crucial to our success. They will undoubtedly be necessary for the entire year. I'm excited for the Vitality Blast to begin because I find it to be a fantastic challenge."
