Lancashire wins by 57 runs thanks to an Australian's four
wickets for twelve.
Lancashire Lightning 179 for 7 (Bohannon 39, Bruce 35) defeated Derbyshire
Falcons 122 (Guest 42, Green 4–12) by 57 runs.
Lancashire Lightning defeated Derbyshire Falcons for the second time in three
matches, winning comfortably by 57 runs at Emirates Old Trafford in the
Vitality Blast.
After posting 179 for 7 in 20 overs, Lightning held the Falcons to 122 all out,
with highly rated Australian acquisition Chris Green taking 4 for 12 to add to
his fast 22 in 11 balls late in Lancashire's innings.
When asked to bat first, Lancashire made a strong start,
with Josh Bohannon taking 14 off three consecutive balls from Pat Brown and 42
runs scored in the opening four overs. However, Luke Wells was bowled for 5 by
Daryn Dupavillon, and Bohannon was caught at mid-off by Mitchell Wagstaff off
Zak Chappell for 39, leaving the home team on 50 for 2 at the end of the
powerplay.
Lancashire skipper Keaton Jennings, who had returned to fitness following a
back spasm, scored a breezy 16 before being bowled in the same manner as Wells
off Brown's bowling, and the experiment of moving Luke Wood up the order failed
when he came down the wicket and was stumped off Samit Patel for 1.
Tom Bruce and Matthew Hurst then put on 39 for the fifth
wicket, helped along by a high full-toss from Chappell, who redeemed himself
two balls later by having Bruce caught at deep midwicket by Ross Whiteley for a
28-ball 35.
Lancashire were 121 for 5 after 15 overs, when both Hurst and Steven Croft were
bowled at deep midwicket by Chappell and Brown, respectively, with Hurst
scoring 27 from 25 balls.
Lightning were 157 for 7 at the start of the last over, but Green smashed two
leg-side sixes off Dupavillon's final set of sixes, costing 22 runs and
destroying the South African's numbers. He concluded with one for 35, Chappell went three for 38, Brown two for 37, and Patel one for 29.
Derbyshire's reply got off to a bad start when Luis Reece hit Green for six in
the second over, and things got even worse in the fifth when Mitch Stanley
yorked David Lloyd for ten. Despite scoring 48 runs under the original
field-placing constraints, the visitors' powerplay ended dismally when
Patel pulled Green directly to Jack Blatherwick at deep square leg.
Nearly two overs later, Blatherwick bowled Harry Came for a 22-ball 26 as the
visitors reached the halfway point of their innings, requiring 111 runs off 60
deliveries. Things got worse in the next over when Anuj Dal miscued a pull-off
Wells and was caught by Bohannon for 9. Despite Wells' last over producing
15 runs, the leg-spinner concluded his session with the dangerous Ross Whiteley
caught at deep midwicket by Blatherwick for 9.
Brooke Guest's bid to keep the Falcons' innings together was cut short when he
was caught by Jennings off Tom Aspinwall, and Green then removed Chappell and
Dupavillon with consecutive deliveries in his next over before last man Brown
was run out for naught to complete what had been a one-sided contest.
