Championship stint with Kent. Kent has signed Beyers
Swanepoel as a replacement after the newly contracted seamer pulls out.
Bartlett had a breakout season in the 2023-24 Australian summer, earning his
ODI and T20I debuts against the West Indies in February and claiming the most
wickets in the tournament (20) during the Brisbane Heat's Big Bash League
season. His outstanding performance earned him his first central contract,
which was disclosed by CA last week.
He was scheduled to play five Championship games for Kent
early in the season, but CA denied him permission to manage his workload.
Nathan Lyon's time with Lancashire was recently cut short for a similar
reason, though CA has claimed that they were responsible for Aaron Hardie's
contract withdrawal with Surrey.
Bartlett's initial contract included at least eight T20 Blast contests, and
Kent is awaiting word on whether he would be available for that competition.
Simon Cook, Kent's director of cricket, stated, "National boards are
always going to safeguard their greatest assets, so it was not surprising when
we received word from Cricket Australia that they would be removing his NOC. This
decision does not necessarily rule him out of the Vitality Blast, and we are
still discussing our options with Cricket Australia.
In Bartlett's absence, Kent has signed South African allrounder Beyers
Swanepoel to a deal that covers all formats and extends from May 1 until the
end of the 2024 season. Swanepoel, 25, was part of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape
squad that won the SA20 earlier this year and will make his county cricket
debut.
"We're really excited by the potential that Beyers has and what he can
offer us this season," Cook went on to say. "We looked at him very
closely earlier this year, but he hadn't played enough games to be considered a
viable overseas signing for us. He's a genuine allrounder who adds batting
depth to our lineup across all formats, something we've tried to fill with
overseas players this year."
Swanepoel stated, "I'm absolutely thrilled to join a historic county side
like Kent and to play in all formats of the English county game." I'm
hoping to learn a lot while here with a really talented team. I met with former
Kent overseas players before signing, and they couldn't suggest Kent more
highly as a place to come and strengthen my game in English circumstances.
Kent will begin the season with only one available overseas player, Wes Agar, and will face Somerset in Canterbury on Friday.
