The wicketkeeper-batter has been advised to relax for ten
days.
Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan has been ruled out of the present
five-match T20I series against New Zealand after suffering a grade-one injury
in his right calf muscle. After radiological reports confirmed the injury, Azam
was recommended to rest for ten days.
According to a PCB statement, Azam will now leave the Pakistan squad and report
to the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, where he will "commence his
rehabilitation process under the supervision of the PCB medical panel".
According to the statement, the problem was discovered while Azam was training
for the first T20I on Thursday, which was washed out after only two balls.
Azam has played eight T20Is, the last of which was against New Zealand in
January. Despite his reputation as a batter, Azam has scored only 29 runs in
seven innings, with a high of 10. In the most recent PSL, for example, Azam
scored just 226 runs in 10 innings for Islamabad United, but at a high strike
rate of 171. United won the competition.
That notoriety, and a superb showing at the past edition of the CPL—where he
scored 224 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 155.55 for champions Guyana
Amazon Warriors – have put him in contention for a position in Pakistan's T20
World Cup squad, which will take place in the Caribbean and the United States
in June. Pakistan has lately reintroduced Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, two
CPL-experienced players who were previously out of the picture but have
returned.
After the series against New Zealand closes on April 27, Pakistan will play
seven more matches in the lead-up to the World Cup, three in Ireland and four
in England.
