While Ultra-edge displayed a distinct spike, the third umpire determined
that there was a clear gap between the bat and the ball.
In the second Twenty20 International, third umpire Masudur Rahman
controversially overturned an on-field decision, which infuriated Sri Lanka.
Opener Soumya Sarkar was given out early in the fourth over of Bangladesh's
chase by on-field umpire Sharfuddoula, who declared that he had edged behind a
short delivery from left-arm seamer Binura Fernando. Just as the ball seemed to
pass the bat, Soumya reconsidered that choice right away but had already started to
leave the field when the large screen displayed a clear spike.
However, according to umpire Rahman, there was a noise other than a bat on a ball that caused the spike. He stated live that when the spike appeared
on Ultra-edge, there was a "clear gap" between the bat and the ball.
There was a small misalignment; when the spike appeared, the ball was one frame
past the bat. However, under such conditions, it is typical for the battery to fail
and the misalignment to be attributed to variations in the technology's
calibration.
Furthermore, it was unclear where else the noise that had caused a noticeable
spike may have come from.
Sri Lanka was perplexed when umpire Rahman informed the on-field umpire that
the ruling would be reversed. They gathered around Sharfuddoula, casting doubt
on the choice. Additionally, their coach Chris Silverwood crossed the
sightscreen to speak with Tanvir Ahmed, the fourth official.
"The on-field umpire has given it out," assistant coach Naveed Nawaz
of Sri Lanka subsequently stated at his press conference following the game.
"I'm convinced that in order to reverse an umpire's judgment, the TV
umpire often needs solid proof. The presence of a spike was evident. We watched
it on a large screen. To find out what truly transpired there, we might have to
take it to the match referee. There wasn't enough footage on our displays to
make a statement. The TV umpire undoubtedly possessed proof to refute the
decisions made by the on-field umpire.
"It was going to be the opening wicket. Taking the wicket would have given
us an early advantage. Any wicket matters on a track like this."
It was Soumya's fourteenth birthday. In the seventh over, he would eventually
be dismissed for 26 runs.
