Immediately following the dismissal, Assam withdrew the appeal during the tea
break, and the umpires accepted the ruling.
In the final league match of the Ranji Trophy at the BKC Ground in Mumbai,
Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for the first time in his
sixteen-year professional career for obstructing the field. However, he was
dramatically brought back to bat when the opposition, Assam, withdrew the
appeal.
In the final over before the planned tea break, Rahane was batting at 18 with
Mumbai at 102 for 4, when he hit his 52nd delivery, a fast bowler from Assam
named Dibakar Johri, down to mid-on and took off for a single. Rahane was
trying to return to the crease when Assam captain Denish Das fired a throw at
the keeper's end, but before his batting partner Shivam Dube could deny the
single and send Rahane back, Rahane was hit.
The on-field umpire gave out Rahane on the fourth ball of the 25th over after the Assam players immediately took to the field in an appeal for "obstructing the field". After Mumbai's 102 for 5 against Assam's 84 all-out, tea was taken two balls ahead of schedule.
But Assam informed the umpires during the tea break that they were going to withdraw the appeal. The laws state that for a batter to be recalled, the appeal for dismissal must be withdrawn before the next ball is bowled and approved by the umpires. Fortunately for Rahane, both teams were back in the dressing room and play had paused following his brief dismissal. The umpires accepted the withdrawal of the appeal, and roughly twenty minutes later Rahane went out to bat once more.
Rahane, though, was unable to capitalize on his good fortune
and was dismissed four overs later by the same bowler. He only made it through
17 more deliveries before getting out for 22 off 69 balls.
Rahane was rescuing Mumbai's innings with Dube after they had fallen to 60 for
4 in the 16th over. Rahane had already hit three fours in his innings, two
through the covers and one wide of mid-on. 50 runs from 77 deliveries
represented their partnership, which included 30 runs from Dube, 16 from
Rahane, and 4 extras.
Mumbai chose to bowl first, and Shardul Thakur, who had
recovered from injury in the previous round, ripped through the visitors with
figures of 6 for 21 from 10.1 overs to bowl Assam out in just 32.1 overs.
Rahane's Ranji season has started poorly so far; he has only scored 112 runs at
an average of 16.00 from eight innings. Due to injuries, he had missed two
Ranji League games: one against Bengal led by Dube, and the other against Bihar
under the leadership of Shams Mulani.
Mumbai has already advanced to the quarterfinals and
presently sits atop the Group B standings with 30 points from six games—four
wins, one draw, and one loss.
