Kasun
Rajitha replaced the injured player in Sri Lanka's starting lineup.
On
the third morning of the Test match against Afghanistan, Chamika Gunasekara, a
debutant for Sri Lanka, was struck on the helmet by a bouncer from Naveed
Zadran and had to be taken out of the match due to injury. After being promptly
cleared to replace a player with a concussion, Kasun Rajitha started bowling
early in Afghanistan's second innings.
The
24-year-old Gunasekara was taken to the hospital for additional evaluation
after leaving the field, as confirmed by the team manager of Sri Lanka to
ESPNcricinfo.
When
Gunasekara tried to duck beneath Naveed's bouncer in the 107th over of Sri
Lanka's first innings, the ball did not rise as much as he had anticipated.
After striking the top of the helmet, the ball sailed past the wicketkeeper for
four leg byes. After receiving an instant concussion check, Gunasekara was
cleared to resume batting and was given permission to continue.
Nonetheless, Gunasekara appeared to be having difficulty in the 110th over. He clutched his head and seemed to be in obvious pain as the medical personnel came on to examine him. After being removed from the field, he never came back.
