The
captain of Karnataka, Mayank Agarwal, was admitted to a private hospital in
Agartala on Tuesday after complaining of burning in his mouth and throat and
stomach pain after drinking something from a bottle he thought contained drinking
water while on an IndiGo flight.
Agarwal
was traveling from Agartala to Surat via New Delhi on Tuesday night in
preparation for Karnataka's Ranji Trophy fifth-round match against Railways,
which gets underway on Friday. After throwing up on board, Agarwal was taken
off the plane and taken to the hospital while the other members of the
Karnataka team continued their journey.
Agarwal
was admitted to ILS Hospitals, and the hospital subsequently stated that he is
"clinically stable" and under "clinical monitoring."
Agarwal was reportedly suffering from "oral irritation" and "lip
swelling." He is going to be watched for a full day.
The
physicians caring for Agarwal and representatives of the Tripura Cricket
Association (TCA) are in communication with the Karnataka State Cricket
Association (KSCA).
On
behalf of Agarwal, the Karnataka team manager has also asked the Tripura police
to look into the incident. A case has been filed under the purview of the New
Capital Complex Police Station in Agartala, and a formal complaint has been
signed and forwarded to K Kiran Kumar, Superintendent of Police (Tripura West).
Agarwal
is scheduled for a few tests, after which it will be decided whether or not he
can spend the next few days at home in Bengaluru for additional testing. This
virtually eliminates him from the forthcoming Ranji match.
IndiGo
confirmed the flight's return to Agartala due to a medical emergency in a press
release: "IndiGo flight 6E 5177, which was scheduled to depart from
Agartala to Delhi, had to return to its origin due to a medical emergency
onboard. After being unloaded, the passenger was taken to the hospital
immediately in need of additional medical care. At 1620 hours, the aircraft
took off once more for its destination."
This season, Agarwal has already amassed two hundred and fifty runs. After two victories, one draw, and one loss in their last four games, Karnataka is presently ranked second in Group C. The team's designated vice-captain, 23-year-old batter Nikin Jose, is expected to assume the captaincy.
